Torii 鳥居
Torii (鳥居) is the name of a traditional Japanese gate usually found at the entrance of or near a Shinto shrine to symbolically represent the transition to a sacred space. They can also be found at Buddhist temples, and some theories state that they may have originated in India. Torii were traditionally made from wood or stone. The oldest existing stone torii was built in the 12th century and can be found at the Hachiman Shrine in the Yamagata prefecture. Wooden torii are typically painted red and black, but a white and red version can be found in Kamakura.
