Shimenawa 標縄

from £5.00

Shimenawa (標縄) is a type of rope made from rice straw used for ritual purification in the Shinto religion. Shimenawa ropes can be found in a variety of sizes, ranging from a few centimeters to several metres in diameter. They are often decorated with “shide” (紙垂), a zig-zagged paper streamer. The space where a shimenawa is hung marks a sacred space and can be found at shrines and torii gates. They can also be wrapped around “yorishiro,” or objects capable of attracting spirits, such as trees or stones. The cutting or moving of these trees or stones is thought to bring misfortune.

Available in two sizes. Frame not included.
