Sejima Kazuyo 妹島和世 - A4 Riso Print (Signed and Numbered)

£15.00

Sejima Kazuyo 妹島和世
Architect

一級建築士 (1956年10月29日– )

過去に女性たちがプロジェクトの対等なパートナーであったにも関わらず、女性の主人配偶者にしか賞が贈られませんでした。

Sejima Kazuyo was born in Ibaraki prefecture and graduated from Japan Women’s University in 1979. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree in architecture, and soon joined architecture firm Toyo Ito and Associates until 1987 when she established her own firm. In 1995 she partnered with longtime co-worker Nishizawa Ryue to establish SANAA, where she continues to work today.

Sejima’s work often incorporates glass, marble, and displays an arrangement of curves in both the interior and exterior. She strives to combine buildings with surrounding areas and allow people indoors to see the outside world. One of her most recent projects is the Sumida Hokusai Museum in Tokyo.

The Pritzker Prize, awarded annually to honour architects who produce consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the environment through architecture, was founded in 1979. Despite this long history, it was not until 2004 that a woman took the top prize—further deepening the controversy regarding sexism in the industry. In the past on multiple occasions, the prize had been awarded to female architects’ male spouses, even though the women were equal partners on the projects.

Sejima went on to win the Pritzker Prize in 2010, a joint award shared by her SANAA partner Nishizawa. Sejima became the first Japanese woman to win the award and only the second woman in the world to do so. In 2010, she was also appointed director of architecture for the Venice Biennale, making her the first woman to assume this position.

What is a riso print?

These prints use risograph technology, a method of printing developed in Japan in the mid-1980s. It can be described as a mix between screenprinting and photocopying. The risograph process produces prints with extremely vibrant, crisp inks, and sometimes these inks overlap during the printing process to create interesting and unique details. These soy-based inks also have a lower environmental impact.
