Fuji Ari 藤明里 - A4 Riso Print (Signed and Numbered)
Fuji Ari 藤明里
Commercial airline pilot
日本国内で初めての旅客機の女性機長 (1968年– )
操縦免許を取得したのにも関わらず、多くの日本男性は彼女に旅客機の機長になることは無理だと言いました。
Fuji Ari grew up near the Yokota Air Base in Japan and knew since her high school years that she wanted to become a pilot. When she realized that the Self Defense Forces did not accept women at all, she looked to the country’s Civil Aviation College. Her application was rejected—their reason was that she was supposedly "too short" to qualify.
Instead of giving up on her dream, she attended Law School, joined a company, and saved enough money to attend pilot training school in America, where women applicants were much more welcome. With her pilot’s license in hand, she returned to Japan but was met with negativity—despite having her license, many men still told her that it was impossible.
Eventually, Fuji was accepted into the trainee program at JAL Express, which gave her the chance to make history. Finally, in 2010, she became Japan’s first female commercial airline captain. A year after becoming a co-pilot, she got married. She recounts how male pilots would often suggest that she quit now and focus on family instead.
In addition to her roles as a pilot, Fuji is also an instructor, teaching the next generation of flight students, and she has noticed that more and more women have been entering the industry since her promotion. Anecdotally, since becoming a captain, Japan’s Civil Aviation College lowered their height requirement.
What is a riso print?
These prints use risograph technology, a method of printing developed in Japan in the mid-1980s. It can be described as a mix between screenprinting and photocopying. The risograph process produces prints with extremely vibrant, crisp inks, and sometimes these inks overlap during the printing process to create interesting and unique details. These soy-based inks also have a lower environmental impact.
