Mukai Chiaki 向井千秋
The first Japanese woman in space

日本人女性初の宇宙飛行士 (1952年5月6日– )

彼女は23日間の宇宙滞在で、骨や筋肉の代謝から宇宙旅行が老化現象に与える影響など様々な実験を行いました。

Mukai Chiaki is a Japanese physician and JAXA astronaut who opened the door to a field that was previously unheard of for Japanese women. She received a doctorate in medicine in 1987, a doctorate in physiology in 1988, joined the Japan Surgical Society in 1989, and went on to become an assistant professor in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Keio University. For a Japanese woman to achieve such professional success in this era was already impressive—and yet this was just the beginning of her career. Mukai was approached by the National Space Development Agency of Japan (now JAXA) to become an astronaut, and she took the opportunity to combine her love for medicine with scientific research.

In addition to becoming the first Japanese woman to fly in space, she became the first Japanese citizen to fly twice—first aboard the STS-65 Space Shuttle Columbia in 1994, and a second time aboard the STS-95 Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998. Through both missions, she has spent a total of 23 days in space, conducting dozens of experiments on everything from bone and muscle metabolism to the impact of space travel on the ageing process.

Upon returning to earth, she worked for JAXA in various roles and departments and became a senior advisor to the JAXA Executive Director. From 2015 until 2017 she served as the Vice President of the Tokyo University of Science. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the ‘Prime Minister’s Special Citation for Contributions to Gender Equality.’

What is a riso print?

These prints use risograph technology, a method of printing developed in Japan in the mid-1980s. It can be described as a mix between screenprinting and photocopying. The risograph process produces prints with extremely vibrant, crisp inks, and sometimes these inks overlap during the printing process to create interesting and unique details. These soy-based inks also have a lower environmental impact.
