「実は、意地悪な人たちって、彼らは身体イメージに関する問題がある人たちだよ。もう克服したけどね。彼らもそれを克服してもいい頃だ。」

Watanabe Naomi rose to fame in Japan when she performed an impersonation of Beyonce on the variety show Waratte Iitomo! in 2008, and eventually became a regular guest comedian—a challenge in an industry normally dominated by men. Her deft social media skills gained her a huge audience—today, she is the most followed person in Japan on Instagram.

Watanabe has long been an icon for plus-sized women in Japan. Her fashion label, Punyus, offers trendy clothing up to size 22—an uncommon offering in a country where eating disorders have been increasing and average body weights have been decreasing since the 1980s. While she didn’t set out to become an ambassador for body positivity, she stated in a 2019 interview with US magazine The Cut, “I recognized that I could be more vocal about it. In Japan, there are lots of curvy girls who want to enjoy fashion, but don’t know where to get it or how to get it. I think about those girls. I want to focus on doing a lot, and being inclusive.”

When asked about online bullying, she simply stated, “The people who say negative things, they’re the ones with body issues. I’m over them, so it’s time that they get over them, too.”
