(Retired) Kinkaku-ji Golden Temple 2020 Wooden Tree Ornament
Sorry, this 2020 limited-edition ornament has been retired. Pre-order the 2021 ornament here!
Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺, literally “Temple of the Golden Pavilion) is a famous landmark in the ancient Japanese capital of Kyoto. Officially named Rokuon-ji (鹿苑寺, literally "Deer Garden Temple"), it is a World Heritage Site with history dating back to 1397.
The entire structure is covered in gold leaf, which is thought to mitigate pollution and purify negative thoughts. Aside from its spiritual meanings, the pavilion was originally built in the Muromachi period—an age where visual excess was in fashion, and the addition of gold was intentionally chosen to create a striking image when reflected in the pond below.
My version of Kinkaku-ji depicts a snowy winter scene inspired by traditional ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The design is printed on laser-cut walnut wood for a handmade-feel, and strung with a bright red ribbon trimmed in gold thread. Each ornament measures 9cm tall (3.5 inches) x 5.5cm wide (2.1 inches) wide, not including the ribbon. Ornaments are printed on one side only. Each ornament is presented in a brown storage box with interior black foam padding for safe storage after the holidays.
