Shika 鹿
Shika (鹿) or sika, is the Japanese word for deer. In Japan, the species is known as the nihonjika, or “Japanese deer.” It is one of the few species of deer that does not lose its spots upon reaching maturity, although those found in Japan have more subtle spots. In Japan, they are considered to be the messengers of the Shinto gods and are free to roam temples and public spaces, especially in areas such as Miyajima and Nara. Nara deer are especially famous for bowing their heads before being fed by humans.
