Sanzaru 三猿
Sanzaru (三猿) is the Japanese name of the Three Wise Monkeys that embody the statement “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” The source that popularized the philosophy stems from a 17th-century carving above a door in the famous Tosho-gu shrine in Nikko, Japan, and is believed to incorporate Confucius’s Code of Conduct. The original teaching had nothing to do with monkeys and the concept arose from a simple play on words. The Japanese translation of “mizaru, kikazaru, iwazaru” (見ざる, 聞かざる, 言わざる) or, “see not, hear not, speak not,” contains the syllables “zaru,” which matches a modified form of “saru,” meaning monkey.
