Chochin 提灯
Chochin (提灯) is the name of a Japanese paper or silk lantern with a spiral bamboo frame. Chochin lanterns are often found at festivals or hung outside shops to attract attention. Chochin have their own style of lettering called chochinmoji (提灯文字), developed in the Edo period for advertising. Here, the illustration depicts a red “akachochin” for an okonomiyaki restaurant and a white lantern for a takoyaki shop.
